English tips for Brazilians: Acronyms and Abbreviations

DISCLAIMER: I’m not a teacher neither an expert in English. I just want to share with you some tips that I have learned.

Acronyms and abbreviations are normally used to speed up the writing. A typically case is when you are “talking” over the Skype, WhatsApp or any digital tool. We usually see some of these abbreviations in emails but take care because some of them are very informal.

TBD: to be defined (Location: TDB)

OOO: out of office (I’ll be OOO tomorrow.)

EOB: end of business (I’ll send the report by EOB Today.) PS: EOB usually is around 5 PM

EOD: end of day (I’ll send the report to you by EOD tomorrow.)

EOY: end of year (EOY report review)

BRB: back right back (I’ll have lunch now. I’ll BRB.)

GM: good morning (Hey Rodrigo, GM!)

TY: thank you

THX: thanks

GR8: great (That is GR8!!!)

B/C: because (I will join late tomorrow b/c I have an appointment.)

U: You (I need to talk with u.)

W/: with (I need to talk w/ you.)

W/U: with you (I need to talk w/u.)

W/O: without (The meeting will not start w/o you)

HRU: how are you?

CYA: see you

TTYL: talk to you later (CYA, TTYL.)

ASAP: as soon as possible (I need to talk w/u ASAP.)

AFAIK: as far as I know (AFAIK, my flight to US is confirmed.)

AFK: away from keyboard (For any help please call me, I’ll be AFK.) PS: “away from keyboard” é uma expressão para dizer que a pessoa não está em sua mesa de trabalho ou à frente de seu computador.

ATM: at the moment (There is nothing what we can do ATM.)

FYI: for your information (FYI, I just sent the report.)

IMHO: in my humble opinion (IMHO we need to review it again.)

PBA: personal business appointment (I’ll not able to meet you Today b/c I have a PBA at 5:00 PM.)

WFH: working from home (I’m WFH Today.)

JK: just kidding (Sorry man, I was JK…)

OIC: Oh, I see

BTW: by the way (BTW, I’m going to France next week.)

NVM: nevermind (Sorry, NVM.)
